A State-of-the-Art sports complex right here in Washington County!
The Sportsplex will be a place where everyone can play sports and exercise and it will bring more money and jobs into Washington County by hosting district, statewide and regional tournaments.
The plan includes 15 baseball fields and 26 soccer fields that can be easily converted for other sports such as flag football. The complex will also contain a walking and exercise track, children’s playground and three concession stands. Total cost for the Sportsplex is about $20 million and it can be built in phases.
The Delta Sportsplex Foundation aims to begin the initial phase of construction soon, and the support of the community is as important now as much as ever. To be clear, all existing parks in the city of Greenville and Washington County will continue to operate uninterrupted. The Sportsplex is designed to complement, not compete, with the numerous neighborhood parks in Greenville and Washington County.
The site is designed to utilize approximately 90 acres located just South of the Washington County Convention Center near Legion Field. The entire complex will be open to anyone who wants to play sports, walk, or enjoy the outdoors by walking on the track or taking their children or grandchildren to the playground.
There is GREAT potential for the Sportsplex to provide a significant economic boost to Greenville and Washington County. Research of other similar sized communities indicates that the revenues just from additional sales and hotel taxes alone will exceed $10 million annually if the facility hosts a minimum of 4 separate tournaments for soccer, baseball and softball per year. Additionally, with the expected cost of construction at approximately $20,000,000.00, local contractors, engineers and suppliers will greatly benefit from the initial construction phase. The Foundation intends to hire a minimum of four individuals including a Director, Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Staff and Administrative Assistant.
The Delta Sportsplex will be operated as a not-for-profit organization known as the Delta Sportsplex Foundation, Inc. Any revenue from facility operations will be returned to the complex in the form of facility improvements. Initial site plans are complete and the Foundation is properly organized as a nonprofit corporation under the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office.
